Wide Field of View Imaging System for Situational Awareness

Abstract: "This thesis explores the contribution of using freeform optics and curved sensors when designing optical systems. For this, we seek to push the limits of existing systems with a wide field of view (>20°) and a high angular resolution (~ 10"). For airborne imaging applications, the system must also have a minimum volume.

This work presents the possibilities offered by a 3-freeform-mirror based on an αZ configuration on one hand, and a 4-freeform-mirror combination in a "W" configuration on the other hand. The addition of a curved sensor makes it possible to relax the manufacturing constraints in both cases.

A prototype of the 4-mirror system was built, which allowed to explore the difficulties related to the manufacturing of freeform mirrors and curved sensors, and the alignment of the assembly."
