We have built an apparatus to manipulate metastable Helium atoms (He*) loaded in optical lattices and to measure atom-atom correlations in many-body quantum states. The special properties of He*, its light mass and its large internal energy, enable an original and innovative detection method which can reconstruct the three dimensional positions of and correlations between individual atoms after a long time of free fall, providing direct access to momentum-space correlations.

May 2024: we worked on the characterisation of our single-atom detector and applied approaches from quantum detector tomography, with some modification to account for the shot-to-shot fluctuations to the total atom number. Read our new preprint if you are interested : arxiv:2405.01211 (2024)
January 2024: we publish a new preprint where we report the observation of non-Gaussian correlations associated with quantum fluctuations induced by interactions. In particular we have monitored the connected two-body correlations at opposite momenta, revealing a non-monotonic behavior. Check here : arxiv:2401.15340 (2024)
January 2024: Thomas Chalopin is joining the Lattice Helium team with a permanent CNRS position!! Welcome Thomas!!
April 2023: we have published a puzzling observation in Phys. Rev. Lett., for which we have yet no clue about its microscopic origin: algebraic tails 1/k^4 in the time-of-flight distributions of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of impurities. Many thanks to our theory collaborators Pietro and Thierry!
March 2023: we published a Letter in Phys. Rev. Research. Here we exploit the single-atom-resolved detection method to measure correlations between up to 6 individual atoms! We characterize emblematic states like BECs and Mott insulators with unprecedented resolution, obtaining new information.
January 2023: Antoine received one of the Best PhD prize from the Doctoral School EDOM (link), congrats !!
