Helium - Lattice

We have built an apparatus to manipulate metastable Helium atoms (He*) loaded in optical lattices and to measure atom-atom correlations in many-body quantum states. The special properties of He*, its light mass and its large internal energy, enable an original and innovative detection method which can reconstruct the three dimensional positions of and correlations between individual atoms after a long time of free fall, providing direct access to momentum-space correlations.

July 2026: our paper reporting the observation of non-Gaussian statistics of an order parameter across a continuous phase transition is now published in Nature (here).

July 2026: Géraud defends his PhD and becomes a doctor, congrats!

May 2026: we host our colleagues from Italy for the second edition of the Palaiseau-Florence workshop on ultracold atoms. We had great discussions and a great time!

November 2025: great discussions at Institut d'Optique led us (Browaeys, Chalopin, Clément, Ferrier-Barbut and Lahaye) to write an article about connected correlations and their interest for cold atom experiments - see preprint here

October 2025: with Jérome and Raphael from Laboratoire Kaster-Brossel, we have co-organised the annual meeting of the GDR Quantum Gases at Institut d'Optique

September 2025: our team has observed the universal non-Gaussian regime across a continuous phase transition from measuring the full probability distribution of the order parameter. This work, done in collaboration with N. Dupuis (Paris), A. Rançon (Lille) and T. Roscilde (Lyon), is now on the arxiv (here).  

September 2025: our work on entanglement between two Gaussian bosonic modes in collaboration with the Quantum Atom Optics team of C. Westbrook and D. Boiron is now published in Physical Review Letters (here) !

Mai 2025: we had an interesting workshop on correlations in complex systems 

Mars 2025: two new interns are joining the team, welcome Jeanne and Henry !

 

January 2025: our latest work has been published in Nature Physics (here). It reports the suppression of Bogoliubov pairing and the observation of non-Gaussian correlations induced by interactions. In particular we have monitored the connected two-body correlations at opposite momenta, revealing a non-monotonic behavior.
