General seminar by Sophie Bouchoule and Aristide Lemaître

  • Séminaire (général)
  • Evénement scientifique

General seminar by Sophie Bouchoule and Aristide Lemaître, Sustainable Development co-referents C2N, CNRS, Université Paris-Saclay, on Thursday 3 April at 1:15pm in the auditorium of the Institut d'Optique Graduate School in Palaiseau, on the topic: "Energy savings at C2N, sharing experiences."

Abstract: "C2N's infrastructure and research activities in the field of information and communication technologies make it a major consumer of energy and resources. Some resources are rare or precious (such as helium, water and certain raw materials), while others are toxic or emit high levels of greenhouse gases (such as fluorinated gases). The air conditioning of C2N's premises also consumes a lot of energy. Over 55% of the electrical energy consumed by the building is used to air-condition the laboratories and cleanroom. In relation to the total number of occupants (~400 people), the total energy consumption of the C2N building in 2019 was more than twice the average consumption of the laboratories and buildings operated by the CNRS. How can we control our energy consumption while maintaining the environmental parameters required for our micro-nanofabrication processes, materials development and the study of devices manufactured in our laboratories? This is the challenge we face. A report will be presented on the actions taken since 2022 to save certain resources, rationalise our energy expenditure and reduce the carbon footprint associated with the operation of our building. We will be sharing our experience and our objectives for 2025. Even if the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions from the C2N building have been halved since 2021, they are still significant, and we need to add to this the other sources of emissions linked to our research activities and missions."
