PhD students' seminar given by Joana TORRES from the group Imaging and Information, on 05 May 2022 at 1.15pm in the auditorium of the Institut d'Optique in Palaiseau and by videoconference, on the topic: "Adaptive Optics Control in Strong Turbulence Scenarios for Free Space Optical Communication."

Abstract: "Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) allows for high throughput data links to satellites. However, the performance of FSOC systems is affected by atmospheric turbulence, which causes scintillation, affecting the coupling of light into a fibre at the receiver. Adaptive Optics (AO) has been proposed for use in communications for wavefront correction. However, AO control loops are likely to be rendered unstable by fast-changing turbulent conditions encountered in FSOC.

The use of optimal predictive control techniques has the potential to significantly enhance FSOC performance in such scenarios.  Here, we present these control techniques and the turbulence conditions experienced in FSOC links. Experimental results using a standard integrator controller are shown to illustrate the performance issue."
