The Charles Fabry Laboratory of Institut d'Optique is a research unit with the Institut d'Optique Graduate School (IOGS) and CNRS with the partnership of University Paris-Sud 11. It is the historical pillar of research at Institut d'Optique. Research of the laboratory covers a wide spectrum of optics and its applications. It is a interface laboratory between two institutes of CNRS. Mainly linked to the Institut de Physique, it is also associated to the Institut des Sciences de l'Ingénierie et des Systèmes.
About 180 people are members of the laboratory including 22 CNRS researchers, 25 professors and assistant professors of IOGS or University Paris-Sud and 39 belonging to the administrative and technical staff. PhD students, postdocs and visitors represent more than half of the size of the lab. It is organized in 6 research groups. Some of these are formed of two or three teams.

The new acronym of the laboratory was engraved on a 10 µm² tablet. Writing and reading were carried out by scanning a local probe (AFM tip) on a ferroelectric strontium barium niobate (SBN) thin film (1 µm). Writing is achieved by applying a voltage between the tip of the microscope and the film substrate : this voltage induces a local remnant polarization. The image is then realized by exploiting the sensitivity of the microscope tip to the electric field existing above the polarized areas, using a Kelvin Probe method. Alain Aspect, Professeur titulaire de la Chaire Augustin Fresnel à l’Institut d’Optique Graduate School , Professeur à l'École Polytechnique et Directeur de Recherches émérite au CNRS, s’est vu décerner le grand prix de l’Optical Society of America (OSA), la Ives Medal / Jarus Quinn Prize.
Le Groupe Lasers du Laboratoire Charles Fabry, à l'Institut d'Optique Graduate School, participe à un consortium d'entreprises et d'institutions de recherche de cinq pays européens, BRIDLE.
