concentrateur luminescent

Thesis defense of Lisa LOPEZ, PhD student in the Lasers group of the LCF, on Monday 11 December 2023 afternoon at the Institut d'Optique Graduate School in Palaiseau, on the topic: "Luminescent concentrators for active SWIR imaging."

Abstract: "The SWIR (Short Wave Infrared 1 µm - 3 µm) wavelength band is of great interest in imaging because it allows us to collect information that is different from and complementary to visible imaging. It requires the use of specific illumination sources, ideally incoherent broadband sources that combine high power (to illuminate a large field) and high luminance (to illuminate at long distances).

Such sources do not currently exist. The aim of this work is to investigate the possibility of using laser cristal emitting in the SWIR, not for their stimulated emission, but for their spontaneous emission.
For this purpose, we have studied several laser crystals with different properties as luminescents concentrators (Cr:ZnSe, CTH:YAG, Er:Cr:YSGG), which allow a good collection of the spontaneous emission. After optimizing the extraction of light from the concentrators, we obtained interesting results for SWIR imaging. This work shows the potential of laser crystals for realizing new incoherent illumination sources in the SWIR and explains how to choose a material to make a luminescent concentrator in the SWIR."
